Controversial Extortion Law and 'El Tomate' Arrest in Mexico

Mexico has passed a new anti-extortion law that includes a controversial clause granting special privileges to government officials. This amendment reduces the maximum sentence for a public servant who fails to report an extortion case they were aware of from 20 to 12 years in prison, whereas for ordinary citizens, the sentence remains unchanged. President Claudia Sheinbaum stated she was not aware of this addition to the bill. In another development, Martín 'N', alias 'El Tomate', a member of the criminal cell 'Los Gigios' linked to Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada, was arrested in Nogales, Sonora. The operation was led by the Navy and the state prosecutor's office. 'El Tomate' is considered a key piece in the violence network along the Sonora-Arizona corridor. He had an arrest warrant for organized crime and was found in possession of methamphetamine.
