Four young people were injured on the evening of April 2 during a local fair in Ometepec, Guerrero, after a mechanical ride malfunctioned while in operation, reported the Guerrero Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection Secretariat (SGIRPCGRO). "Personnel from the Costa Chica Region Emergency Response Center immediately went to the scene to support municipal authorities and assist the injured young people," the department stated in an official press release. Two of the injured were taken to the IMSS Bienestar clinic in Ometepec, while the other two received on-site care and remain under observation. Authorities reported that none of the injured are in critical condition, although they were carefully evaluated due to the bruises and contusions they suffered from falling off the ride. Unofficially, witnesses indicated that the accident occurred while the operator was securing the ride's users, and at that moment, a child allegedly activated the attraction, causing the incident. Witnesses described moments of panic among attendees, who watched as the young people fell from a height while the ride continued to move. The SGIRPCGRO, in coordination with municipal authorities, proceeded to inspect the mechanical conditions of all amusement rides installed at the fair, verifying they had the required permits and the mandatory insurance policy coverage as per current regulations. "Technical personnel are conducting the corresponding inspection to determine the causes of the event and ensure that necessary safety standards are met," the department stated. The secretariat assured that the necessary preventive measures will be taken to avoid future incidents. Finally, the SGIRPCGRO will continue to investigate the causes of the accident to determine if it was the result of human error, a technical failure, or a combination of both factors. The results of these inspections will help reinforce safety at future fairs and prevent similar incidents.
