The discussion about the prohibition of bullfighting continues in Puebla, as a definitive resolution on this issue has not yet been reached. The Animal Welfare Institute expressed its intention to seek the prohibition of these events during the next edition of the fair, which will be held from April 24 to May 11.
The Animalist Movement of Puebla has urged authorities to put an end to bullfighting and cockfighting, arguing that animal suffering for entertainment purposes is no longer accepted by a significant part of society. The movement has also requested a meeting with the deputy who proposed the prohibition of bullfighting, Jimmy Natale Uranga.
On the other hand, the Government of the State of Puebla has stated that, while it is considering the continuation of bullfighting, cockfighting will indeed take place at the Palenque. The state administration has reaffirmed its commitment to animal protection and the promotion of humane treatment towards animals, but it has also emphasized the importance of cultural traditions as part of Puebla's heritage.
The governor of Puebla, Alejandro Armenta Mier, has assured that legality will be upheld in all activities of the Puebla Fair, including regulations that guarantee the welfare of animals. Despite this, the Animalist Movement maintains its opposition to bullfighting at the 2025 Fair, reminding that there are rulings that prohibit bullfighting in some municipalities.
In a statement, the movement highlighted the importance of respecting existing judicial decisions, which have resulted from legal protections promoted in favor of animal rights. Despite the controversies, the Puebla Fair 2025 will feature the participation of recognized artists in a free forum, keeping the discussion around bullfighting and respect for animals alive.
