Puebla Reduces Femicide Rates by 20%

During a press conference, the governor of Puebla, Alejandro Armenta, reported that this month more than 7,000 women have been attended to, contributing to a 20% reduction in femicides in the state.

The results from the Carmen Serdán Houses show that 1,819 women have been assisted by the Attorney General, 1,990 consultations have been provided, and workshops have been held with 2,898 participants. Additionally, 376 women have used the library and playroom, and 53 have been sheltered, totaling 7,136 women benefiting from services.

With the upcoming opening of 25 LIBRE Centers, Puebla will have a total of 52 attention points, strengthening the institutional network for the defense and well-being of women throughout the state. These new centers will join the 27 existing Carmen Serdán Houses.

The LIBRE Centers (Freedom, Independence, Well-being, Networks, and Emancipation) will feature an investment of 30 million pesos from the government of Claudia Sheinbaum. These centers will be distributed across 25 municipalities, yet to be defined.

Virginia González Melgarejo, head of the Women’s Secretariat, explained that the Carmen Serdán Houses are inspired by the Luna Centers used by Claudia Sheinbaum when she was head of Government, evolving into these new spaces that will now become LIBRE Centers.

In addition to providing comprehensive care, the houses and centers will operate as mechanisms for prevention and justice procurement, aiming to make Puebla a national reference in the fight against gender violence.

Governor Alejandro Armenta highlighted that thanks to this strategy, a 20% reduction in femicide cases has been achieved during his administration. More than 7,000 women have been served in the 15 active locations of the Carmen Serdán Houses, demonstrating the effectiveness of these coordinated efforts to provide better care to women.
