Volcano Alerts Cause Flight Cancellations in Puebla

The General Coordination of Civil Protection recommended to the population residing near the Popocatépetl volcano to avoid exposure outdoors due to the constant emission of ash, water vapor, and gas. This measure was taken starting at 07:00 hours to clean the takeoff and landing runways of the Puebla International Airport, which are covered in volcanic ash.

The airlines Volaris and Viva Aerobus announced through their social media the cancellation of several flights to and from Puebla due to the ash fall in the area. Volaris called on passengers to check the status of their flights to avoid delays, while Viva Aerobus recommended staying alert for flight updates and following Civil Protection's guidelines.

The Popocatépetl volcano has recorded periods of tremor, with the most intense occurring between 23:00 and 00:00 hours, accompanied by the expulsion of ballistic material around the crater. As a preventive measure, the volcanic alert traffic light remains at Yellow Phase 2, and it is reported that the exhalations released have caused the ash to disperse northward and northeast of the volcano, mainly affecting Puebla and Tlaxcala.

The municipalities affected by the ash fall are Calpan, Domingo Arenas, Huejotzingo, San Nicolás de los Ranchos, and Atlixco. The presence of ash is also expected in Tianguismanalco, Chiautzingo, San Felipe Teotlalcingo, San Salvador el Verde, San Martín Texmelucan, and San Matías Tlalancaleca.

Viva Aerobus detailed the canceled flights, including the routes Monterrey-Puebla, Guadalajara-Puebla, and Cancún-Puebla, urging passengers to stay informed about flight updates and to follow the protective measures recommended by Civil Protection, such as covering eyes, nose, and mouth, not wearing contact lenses, and storing the ash in a plastic bag to avoid direct contact with it.
