In Puebla, a total of 103 women have gone to authorized public hospitals to undergo an abortion within the permitted period of up to 12 weeks of gestation. The presence of two doctors is required to carry out these procedures.
The state Health Secretary, Araceli Soria Córdoba, reported in a press conference that legal interruptions of pregnancy (ILE) were performed between August and September of this year in five of the six authorized hospitals. She detailed that the IMSS-Bienestar hospitals have a general doctor and a gynecologist on morning shift to carry out the procedures.
These hospitals have been trained to offer the service in accordance with current regulations. Furthermore, training continues in private clinics so they can also perform this procedure safely, although it was not specified which institutions have participated or how many courses have been conducted to date.
On August 15, one month after the approval of the legalization of abortion in the Congress of Puebla, amendments to the Penal Code came into effect. The public hospitals currently providing ILE services are: Women's Hospital of Puebla, Women's Hospital of Tehuacán, ISSSTEP Specialty Hospital, ISSSTE Regional Hospital, La Margarita Hospital of IMSS, and the IMSS Hospital in Cuautlancingo (added in October).
