The Puebla City Council plans to cede a plot of land from the Central de Abasto for the construction of a National Guard barracks, addressing the request of merchants due to the increase in insecurity in the area. Franco Rodríguez Álvarez, Secretary of Governance, mentioned the existence of two plots considered to ensure security in the commercial area.
The initially proposed land had legal issues due to the presence of illegal hydrocarbon taps from Pemex. The start of the construction of the barracks will be established by the federal government, with the City Council responsible for providing the land in a lease. Inspections of the properties are currently being conducted to verify their viability, with the participation of the Heritage Assets area and the Secretary General.
One of the evaluated plots is located on Conde Oriente Boulevard, in the Los Cerritos courts area, recently renovated. Rodríguez Álvarez indicated that two additional options are being studied, including one suggested by the merchants of the Central de Abasto. Although the first option is considered the most viable, it still needs to be confirmed that both plots meet the legal and technical requirements for the construction of the barracks.
These plots would be ceded to the federal government for that purpose. In an interview, it was mentioned that the project did not materialize in 2024 following the assassination of a member of the National Guard in the area.
