Governor Addresses University Strike in Puebla

The governor of Puebla, Alejandro Armenta Mier, emphasized the need for the Attorney General's office to take firm action against those who have violated the autonomy of the university. Along with the Ministry of the Interior, he plans to meet with representatives of Antorcha Campesina to discuss the situation, making it clear that he will not tolerate blackmail or pressure.

Armenta Mier expressed his respect for the autonomy of both public and private educational institutions, considering education as a fundamental right. However, he stated that he will only address legitimate demands that fall within his responsibilities as governor, rejecting the use of violence to demand them.

In an effort to seek a peaceful solution that respects university autonomy, the rector of BUAP, Lilia Cedillo Ramírez, has expressed her willingness to engage in dialogue with students from different faculties. The origin of the student strike dates back to the Faculty of Medicine, where students demanded better conditions for their medical service and internship.

Armenta Mier demanded that Ciudad Universitaria be handed over to the authorities to guarantee the continuity of university operations and the enrollment of students. Furthermore, he called on political actors and external organizations not to interfere in the internal matters of the university, warning that any violation of autonomy will have legal consequences.

The governor pointed out that the strike at Ciudad Universitaria of BUAP is driven by Antorcha Campesina and requested this organization to withdraw from the sit-in, emphasizing the importance of not affecting the 150,000 enrolled students for the upcoming school year. After days of strike at the Faculty of Medicine, students from other faculties have joined the protests.
