The Strengthening and Expansion Plan of the National Electric System 2025-2030 presented by the head of the Ministry of Energy (Sener), Luz Elena González Escobar, details a series of projects in the energy sector of Mexico. It includes the participation of various entities for the generation of clean energy and the modernization of electrical infrastructure.
In the first stage, 12 wind energy projects with a total capacity of 3,211 MW and an estimated investment of 4,204 million dollars are planned. This consists of the installation of 2,470 MW of wind energy and 741 MV in batteries. Additionally, three refineries have been identified for the construction of Cogeneration Plants with a total capacity of 2,422 MW.
Among the planned new cogeneration plants are projects in Hidalgo, Veracruz, and Oaxaca, which are expected to be operational between 2029 and 2030. On the other hand, an investment of 3,600 million dollars is anticipated for the expansion and modernization of the General Electrical Distribution Networks, with the implementation of 86 expansions, modernizations, and new substations.
The general director of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), Emilia Esther Calleja Alor, reported that the plan contemplates an additional generation of 21,846 MW. The CFE will participate with 13,024 MW in Thermal and clean energy Plants, while an addition of 2,422 MW of cogeneration is expected thanks to a collaboration with Pemex. Moreover, private companies will contribute at least 6,400 MW of clean energy.
The plan aims to increase the share of clean energy in the National Electric System, reducing CO emissions by 4.5%. It also mentions the existence of 10 projects to be inaugurated from the previous administration, as well as 16 hydroelectric projects to be completed by the CFE.
