Despite statements from Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, who asserted that the tariffs could return, Sheinbaum believes there will be a good agreement with the United States and that the tariffs will remain paused permanently.
In a press conference from Querétaro, Sheinbaum asked not to speculate on what will happen in a month when she will discuss tariffs with the U.S. president again. Trump's recent actions regarding tariffs came after Mexico committed to deploying 10,000 elements of the National Guard at the border to combat drug trafficking.
The agreements between Sheinbaum and Trump also aim to stop the trafficking of high-caliber weapons into Mexico. A commitment has been established to work on improving security and trade between both countries. The 25 percent tariffs on Mexican products have been paused since February 3 as part of these agreements.
During her call with Trump, Sheinbaum succeeded in halting tariffs on Mexican products. The president detailed that she initially proposed to pause the tariffs indefinitely, but they agreed to do so for one month. Trump, for his part, described the call as very good and was critical of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
