The local deputy of Morena in Querétaro, Arturo Maximiliano García, presented an initiative to increase the penalty for femicide from 40 to 60 years in prison, as well as from 1 to 4 years for domestic violence in the state. He proposed to strengthen the powers of the Public Ministry to issue immediate protection measures for the victims. According to the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, in the year 2024 there were registered 797 femicides nationwide and a total of 3,395 victims of intentional homicide and femicide. In Querétaro, although the statistics are lower, at least 3 femicides have been documented in January, which represents a considerable increase compared to the previous year. García's proposal includes increasing the penalties by up to half in cases of domestic violence when the victim is a pregnant woman or when the aggressor is a public servant. The goal of the reform is to align the local Penal Code with the federal one to impose harsher penalties on those responsible for these crimes. "With this reform, we seek to ensure that the perpetrators of these acts face the consequences of their actions and that the victims receive greater protection from the beginning of the investigation," said the legislator. Additionally, the initiative proposes that the aggressor loses all rights regarding the victim and the children to guarantee the best interests of the child.
