Call to Democratize the Appointment of Notaries

Alejandro Pérez Ibarra, Secretary General of Morena Querétaro, emphasized the need to democratize the system for the designation of notaries in Mexico. This comment arises from the recent assignments of notaries 78 and 79 to individuals with close ties to power, such as Chief Officer Mario Ramírez Retolaza and Roberto Sánchez Lara Murguía, respectively, who is the son of Senator Guadalupe Murguía.

Pérez Ibarra argued that, like the Judiciary, a federal reform is required to ensure the selection of suitable individuals based on their background, professional training, ethical commitment, and civic duty, rather than political closeness determining designations. In this sense, he proposed a democratization of notary appointments, allowing citizens and independent lawyers to hold these positions.

Former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador joined this stance, denouncing as corruption the discretionary appointments of individuals close to governors or secretaries. In particular, he criticized the situation in Querétaro, highlighting the controversy surrounding the appointment of the son of the National Action senator.

López Obrador reiterated that Governor Mauricio Kuri made a mistake by allowing these designations, emphasizing that public office should safeguard the legal security of citizens instead of favoring individuals close to power. In this regard, he highlighted the importance of preventing access to notarial positions from being seen as a privilege reserved for those near centers of power, and advocated for a transparent and meritocratic approach in these selection processes.
