Legislators called to decriminalize abortion in Querétaro

The 14-year-old girl, a victim of rape and prosecuted for homicide in Querétaro, known as Esmeralda, will not face criminal actions following an agreement reached at a dialogue table between the Secretariat of Women and the local Prosecutor's Office. Citlalli Hernández, head of the agency, announced that the teenager will receive support from the Government of Mexico City and Querétaro to ensure her well-being and prevent similar situations from recurring.

Hernández emphasized the importance of providing support to Esmeralda for her recovery and ensuring her development in a safe and healthy environment. Additionally, the implementation of training in the Querétaro Prosecutor's Office to address similar cases with an adequate gender perspective was announced.

An administrative process has been initiated against the officials involved in Esmeralda's case for possible omissions or negligence. Citlalli Hernández highlighted the need to thoroughly investigate the actions that may have violated the young woman's rights, revealing the existence of structural violence that must be eradicated from society.

On the other hand, cooperation has been requested from the governor of Querétaro, Mauricio Kuri, to advance the decriminalization of abortion and prevent more cases like Esmeralda's from occurring. Finally, a call was made to local Congress lawmakers to consider legislation in favor of women's rights and the decriminalization of abortion, aiming not to criminalize any woman for her own decision.
