The State Water Commission (CEA) of Querétaro reported that this year, 78.29 million pesos will be allocated for the detection and repair of leaks in the state's drinking water system. Luis Alberto Vega Ricoy, head of the CEA, emphasized that thanks to anti-leak measures implemented since last year, more than 2,239 million liters of water have been recovered.
During the first quarter of this year, the drinking water system reported an average of 64 daily leaks, an improvement compared to the 70 daily leaks recorded at the end of the previous year. To maintain this treatment, 15.29 million pesos will be added to last year's budget, thus increasing the budget to 78.29 million for this year, representing a 24% increase.
Vega Ricoy highlighted that thanks to the measures implemented, a 92.27% effectiveness in leak repairs in less than 24 hours has been achieved during 2025, a significant advancement compared to the 70.4% recorded in 2024. Of the total amount of water recovered, 1,891 million liters were recovered by crews, and 438 million through the use of leak detectors with artificial intelligence installed in early 2024 along 350 kilometers of pipelines.
In Querétaro, the average water consumption per person is 160 liters daily, half compared to other metropolitan areas like the Valley of Mexico. The increase in the budget will be allocated to maintain the 29 crews of 77 workers assigned additionally.
A call was made to the citizens to contribute with water-saving measures, especially during the dry season. Vega Ricoy emphasized the importance of conserving existing water before considering future projects to obtain more water.
