In Mexico, a concerning number of municipalities are affected by drought. According to the Drought Monitor of the National Water Commission, 119 municipalities are suffering from exceptional drought, 80 are facing extreme drought, 23 are experiencing severe drought, and 374 are experiencing moderate drought. In this context, the state of Querétaro has issued an emergency declaration due to fire seasons and drought.

In Querétaro, 72.4% of its territory is being affected by moderate drought, impacting 17 of the 18 municipalities that make it up. This has led to allocating a fund of 60 million pesos to combat the effects of this phenomenon, supporting firefighters, emergency services, and agricultural producers in the region.

Although 100% of Querétaro's territory presents some degree of drought impact, 27.6% is considered abnormally dry, without being categorized as drought per se. Querétaro joins six other states in the country that also face drought problems across their entire territory: Aguascalientes, Baja California, Chihuahua, Durango, Sinaloa, and Sonora.

At the national level, drought affects 596 municipalities, covering 24.1% of Mexican territory. This situation highlights the urgency of implementing measures to address the challenges brought by water scarcity and its repercussions on various sectors of society.
