In 1982, the story of the Corregidora Stadium began when the then governor of Querétaro, Rafael Camacho Guzmán, decided to build a modern stadium to promote sports in the region. The idea gained momentum by designating Mexico as the host of the 1986 World Cup, opening the possibility of including Querétaro as one of the tournament venues. The stadium was built quickly and inaugurated with a friendly match between Mexico and Poland.
After the World Cup, the Corregidora Stadium became the home of the Gallos Blancos de Querétaro. In 1983, the first official match took place at the stadium between the Cobras and Poza Rica, with the presence of the then president of Mexico, Miguel de la Madrid. With an initial capacity of over 33,000 spectators, the stadium stood out as modern sports infrastructure in its time and hosted renowned teams such as Denmark, West Germany, and Spain.
Over the years, the stadium has witnessed promotions, relegations, and great performances, such as the team's qualification for the final of the Apertura 2015, when they competed for the title against Santos Laguna. Iconic figures of Mexican football, such as Ronaldinho, have left their mark on the stadium by wearing the Gallos jersey in 2014.
In addition to football, the Corregidora Stadium has been the venue for various events such as concerts by national and international artists, religious events, and political acts. The stadium experienced one of its most difficult moments in 2022 during a match between Gallos and Atlas, which resulted in violent incidents. Following these events, stricter security measures were implemented to ensure the safety of fans.
Throughout its 40 years of history, the Corregidora Stadium has established itself as a symbol of Querétaro's identity and a key piece in Mexico's sports infrastructure. During the 1986 World Cup, the stadium hosted several matches, including the first one that ended with a score of 5-0 in favor of Mexico. With each concert, match, and event it hosts, the Corregidora Stadium continues to write its legacy in the history of sports and culture in Querétaro.
