The schools in Querétaro started implementing a new law promoted by Governor Mauricio Kuri González, which prohibits the use of cell phones in basic education schools in the state, being the first of its kind in the entire country. The main objective of this measure is to raise awareness about the possible psychological and social effects derived from the constant use of mobile phones and social media content.
Governor Kuri emphasized the importance of addressing this issue and expressed his concern about the serious possible consequences that uncontrolled cell phone use can have on children, such as anxiety and unhappiness. This regulation will apply to both public and private schools, covering students in basic education (preschool, primary, and secondary) and upper secondary (high school) in Querétaro.
Regarding the implementation of the regulation, Irene Quintanar, head of the Basic Education Service Unit in the State of Querétaro (USEBEQ), mentioned that awareness activities and workshops have been conducted aimed at teachers, students, and parents to prepare them to comply with this provision. Topics such as digital citizenship and peaceful coexistence have been addressed, seeking to foster a healthy educational environment.
Parents believe that this initiative will be beneficial in distancing young people from excessive dependence on cell phones and promoting more open communication with their children, in order to supervise their activities in the digital environment. Querétaro thus positions itself as a leader in the implementation of strict regulations on cell phone use in schools, serving as an example for other states in Mexico.
This new measure, which arises as a pilot project in Querétaro, is seen as an opportunity to assess its effectiveness and possibly extend it nationally or even to other regions. Some parents, like Raymundo García from the capital of Querétaro, state that they would like this regulation to become a generalized law and suggest that the restriction of cell phones in classrooms could be a practice to consider in all schools.
