Sheinbaum Proposes Major Political Reforms in Queretaro

The president has endorsed a plan to colonize the PT and the Green party, which would gradually disappear as they are recruited and registered as members of Morena. This diminishes López Beltrán's power to approve candidacies.

New players, such as Senator Miguel Ángel Yunes Márquez, have been added to the political scene. President Sheinbaum has anticipated reform proposals for non-consecutive re-election and against nepotism.

Sheinbaum faces a rebellion led by senators from Morena, the PT, and the Green Party, as well as opposition lawmakers. They want to expedite the reform for it to take effect in 2027 and extend it to other powers.

The proposals aim to curb the perpetuation of elites in power. Sheinbaum proposed that the reforms begin to be discussed this Tuesday in the Senate. There is an intention to incorporate a prohibition for relatives of former presidents in public service.

Some parties believe that the presidential initiative is a direct blow against them. The amendments seek to immediately affect relatives of former president López Obrador, such as his son Andrés López Beltrán.

Sheinbaum excluded the party and the Judiciary from her initiative. Some ministers could be excluded from re-election. It is proposed to prohibit the access of relatives of former presidents to public office for 10 years.

The president seeks to neutralize resistances in her project with these reforms. She intended to catch Morena off guard and neutralize planned resistances in March. The PT and Greens were key to Morena's qualified majority.
