Querétaro's Governor Proposes Social Media Laws

The governor of Querétaro, Mauricio Kuri González, presented a set of legislative initiatives aimed at regulating the use of mobile devices and social networks among minors in the state. These proposals seek to restrict access to social networks for minors under 14 years old, limit the use of cell phones in primary schools, and control access for teenagers aged 15 to 17 to digital platforms only with parental approval.

In line with these measures, it is contemplated to increase penalties for digital crimes related to harassment and pedophilia, as well as the establishment of spaces called "youth zones" that promote healthy interaction and personal growth through sports, cultural, and community activities.

In his statements, the governor emphasized the risks that the indiscriminate use of social networks and digital devices represents for the development of new generations. He underscored his commitment to ensuring the protection of children and youth in an increasingly complex and dangerous digital environment.

On the other hand, it was detailed that the proposal to prohibit social networks for minors under 15 years old involves the active participation of companies to restrict access to this age group. Regarding the prohibition of cell phones within educational institutions, it was argued that this measure seeks to foster a distraction-free educational environment conducive to the comprehensive learning of students.

Governor Kuri González pointed out that in Querétaro, 70% of minors already have at least one social network, and 45% of them use fake profiles. It was also highlighted that teenagers spend up to six hours daily on these platforms, emphasizing that those who have been victims of cyberbullying are the most affected. Furthermore, it was mentioned that excessive use of social networks is linked to levels of discouragement and distress that impact the daily activities of young people, contributing to cases of depression.

The governor insisted that these measures are necessary to confront challenges and serious crimes present on social networks, such as sexual harassment, pedophilia, and the entrapment of minors by criminal groups.
