An armed attack that occurred on Sunday in a football field in the city of Salamanca, in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, left at least 11 people dead and 12 injured, confirmed the municipal government. According to official reports, the attack took place around 17:20 local time (23:20 GMT) at the fields known as "Campos de las CabaƱas" in the Loma de Flores community, while a football match was in progress, according to a Xinhua report accessed by the Argentine News Agency. Witnesses stated that armed men arrived at the scene in two pickup trucks, and after four individuals got out, they began to shoot indiscriminately at the attendees. "Unfortunately, as a result of these events, the death of 11 people is confirmed, 10 of whom died at the scene and one more while receiving medical attention in a hospital," said the municipal government in a statement. It was also detailed that twelve people were injured by bullet impacts and are being treated at various medical centers. "The municipal government of Salamanca expresses its deepest solidarity with the families and people affected by these events, and reaffirms its commitment to accompany them and work permanently for the security and peace of our community," the text reads. Elements of the Public Security Directorate went to the scene to provide immediate support, while personnel from the National Guard, the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) and the State Public Security Forces (FSPE) implemented an operation to locate those responsible for the attack. In turn, the Attorney General's Office of the state of Guanajuato is carrying out the corresponding investigations to clarify the facts and determine the causes behind the violent incident, while, to date, no arrests related to the case have been reported, pointed out the local government. This attack adds to a series of violent acts that have plagued Guanajuato in recent years, a state with high levels of violence linked to disputes between criminal groups, while authorities reiterated their commitment to reinforce security measures and combat impunity.
