Miguel Ángel Treviño Morales, known as 'El Z-40', leader of Los Zetas, has not been extradited to the United States, according to his lawyer who denied the rumors that circulated on Thursday, February 27. Despite being under arrest, both he and his brother, Omar Treviño, continue to be identified as leaders of the cartel and face charges for various crimes such as drug trafficking, organized crime, and money laundering.
U.S. authorities have repeatedly requested the extradition of the Treviño brothers to bring them to trial and possibly sentence them to life imprisonment. However, these requests have been rejected by Mexican courts. Miguel Ángel Treviño Morales is currently detained in Cefereso Noreste in Nayarit, and his lawyer stated that the extradition process is in an initial phase and that there has been no court ruling regarding it.
According to lawyer Juan Manuel Delgado, the extradition process consists of three phases: the formal request by the government, the judicial opinion phase where defenses and exceptions are presented, and finally the judge's ruling followed by a decision from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the case of 'El Z-40', the stage in which a judge determines whether his extradition is feasible has not yet been reached, making it considered impossible that he has been transferred for that purpose.
Regarding rumors about the supposed extradition of 'El Z-40' and 'El Z-42', it was said that both had been transferred to the United States early in the morning, the former heading to Washington. This information arose from sources in Interpol, although this extradition has not yet been officially confirmed. Since October, the U.S. government has made accusations against the Treviño brothers for various crimes related to the Northeast Cartel.
