Journalist Kevin González from the newspaper El Sol de Nayarit was assaulted by a Municipal Police officer in Tepic while covering an event in the capital. As a result, the journalism community mobilized to demand justice and freedom of expression. The demonstration took place in front of the Municipal Presidency, where banners with slogans such as 'We are journalists, not criminals' and 'No more violence against journalists' were raised.
During the coverage of an incident involving a young woman allegedly responsible for femicide, González and other reporters were intimidated by the officer. He ordered them to delete the taken photographs, arguing that he did not want to be portrayed on social media. Following González's refusal, the police officer attempted to handcuff him without a clear justification, citing an administrative offense.
After filing a criminal complaint with the State Attorney General's Office (FGE), the officer involved in the assault was suspended from his duties while investigations are conducted. However, the suspension was criticized during the protest, as the offending officer continued to work in an office, which was seen as an insufficient punishment and a mockery of the call for justice.
The protest, which included participation from members of various media outlets, reflected the growing concern of the journalism community over violence against journalists in Nayarit. The protesters demanded the ability to carry out their work without fear of reprisals, censorship, or aggression from authorities. This incident adds to others that have recently occurred, raising an alarm among local media and prompting a call to authorities to guarantee protection and press freedom in the state.
