Claudia Sheinbaum Discusses Tariff Negotiations with US

The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced that the decision to establish an agreement with the United States will be made after March 4, the deadline by which it will be defined whether the tariffs that were paused by President Trump on February 3 will come into effect. Sheinbaum also mentioned that an early review of the Treaty between the United States, Mexico, and Canada (USMCA), originally scheduled for 2026, is expected due to Trump's executive orders on tariffs.

During a press conference held on February 28, Sheinbaum shared positive comments about the meeting her Security cabinet and Foreign Minister, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, had with the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, following his visit to Washington. She highlighted that both meetings, focused on border security as part of the tariff pause, were productive and established principles of coordination and collaboration.

The high-level officials' meeting sought to finalize a coordination agreement with Washington to address security issues and avoid the imposition of a 25% tariff on Mexican products, announced by Trump and which could come into effect next Tuesday. Details about the agreements reached will be announced at a press conference by the Security team.

Sheinbaum emphasized that thanks to the 'Northern Border Operation,' agreed upon with Trump, significant detentions have been made in border cities like Tijuana. Since the start of this operation on February 5, 819 people have been detained, 779 firearms confiscated, 91,262 rounds of various calibers seized, and 11,881 kilograms of drugs confiscated, according to information from the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection.

Finally, Sheinbaum did not rule out the possibility of an in-person meeting with Donald Trump after March 4, indicating that the door to a meeting remains open if necessary to avoid tariffs on Mexican products.
