The Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation has decided to keep Mario Aburto Martínez in prison, responsible for the assassination of Luis Donaldo Colosio, presidential candidate for the Institutional Revolutionary Party in 1994. Aburto's detention dates back to the events that occurred on March 23, 1994, during Colosio's presidential campaign in Tijuana, Baja California. At that time, 23-year-old Aburto shot near the candidate's head and was arrested on the spot.
The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) intervened in the case in 2022, requesting its reopening. According to the CNDH, Aburto's brother, Rubén Aburto Martínez, was imprisoned and tortured during Carlos Salinas de Gortari's government in relation to Colosio's assassination in 1994.
Aburto was sentenced to 45 years in prison for the murder of a state leader or any significant politician, based on the evidence presented against him at that time. After 30 years in prison, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation has decided to keep Aburto behind bars, revoking a protective measure that sought his release.
Over the years, the photographs of Mario Aburto Martínez show his evolution in prison. The latest image, in which he is already over fifty years old, evidences the physical changes in his face with more pronounced dark circles, wrinkles extending from his nose to the corners of his lips, and a shaved head.
