Extradition of Drug Lord to the U.S. Completed

The Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) reported that Jorge Alberto Soto Rodas, known as "La Gorda" and identified as an operator of the Sinaloa Cartel, was extradited to the United States last Sunday. Soto Rodas was accused of drug trafficking and organized crime, and his transfer was carried out in compliance with the extradition treaty signed between Mexico and the United States.

The extradition of Soto Rodas was requested by the Federal Court for the Eastern District of Texas, where he faced charges for his alleged involvement in drug trafficking from Guatemala to Mexico and subsequently to U.S. territory. The now-extradited individual was arrested in the state of Puebla in 2023, and after several legal proceedings, the Mexican government approved his delivery, which took place at the Toluca International Airport, State of Mexico, where U.S. agents received him for transfer.

On another note, this extradition adds to the recent delivery of 29 criminal leaders, including Rafael Caro Quintero and key figures from Los Zetas, as part of bilateral cooperation measures against drug trafficking. These actions are the result of pressure exerted by former President Donald Trump through tariff policies against Mexico.

It is noteworthy that the extradition treaty between Mexico and the United States was signed in 1978; however, the first deliveries of criminals to U.S. justice did not begin until 1995.
