The Attorney General's Office of the Republic (FGR) of Mexico announced this Sunday that it has extradited Jorge Alberto Soto Rodas, known as La Gorda, to the authorities of the United States. Soto Rodas, a Mexican national, is a fugitive linked to the Sinaloa Cartel, accused of organized crime and drug-related offenses.

In the statement issued by the FGR, it is detailed that the delivery of Soto Rodas was carried out in compliance with the Extradition Treaty between Mexico and the United States. The extradition request was made by the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.

According to the FGR, Jorge Alberto Soto Rodas, alias La Gorda, is identified as a member of an organization dedicated to drug trafficking, responsible for acquiring, transporting, and trafficking narcotics from Guatemala to Mexico and subsequently to the United States. The individual was arrested in 2023 in the state of Puebla and after various procedures, Mexico granted his extradition to the United States.

The delivery of Soto Rodas took place at the Toluca International Airport, State of Mexico, where he was transferred to U.S. agents. The extradition agreement between both countries dates back to 1978, although the first extraditions were carried out starting in 1995.

In another related news, last week, Mexico extradited 29 Mexican drug traffickers, including Rafael Caro Quintero and leaders of Los Zetas, to U.S. authorities. The extradition was carried out amid pressure from the Donald Trump administration, which had designated Mexican cartels as foreign terrorist organizations. Caro Quintero, co-founder of the now-defunct Guadalajara Cartel, was one of the extradited along with 28 other individuals.
