The technical director of the Mexican National Team, Javier Aguirre, suffered a severe blow to the head due to a beer can thrown from the stands during the match against Honduras. The incident took place at the General Francisco Morazán Stadium, but so far the aggressor has not been identified due to a lack of security cameras in the stadium.
Authorities are conducting an investigation to find the perpetrator of this violent act. The Commissioner has stated that they are reviewing videos taken by fans present at the match to identify the aggressor. Despite the lack of surveillance cameras in the stadium, they hope to find some recording that helps to clarify the case.
The Mexican National Team will face Honduras again on Tuesday, November 19, at the Nemesio Diez Stadium in Toluca, State of Mexico. Although nearly 48 hours have passed since the assault, the responsible party has still not been found, and they are being sought for attempted homicide.
The Commissioner of the National Police of Honduras has stated that, once detained, the aggressor will be tried for attempted homicide against the technical director of the Mexican team. According to the Commissioner, the thrown projectile could have fatal consequences, and therefore it is a serious crime that must be punished with the maximum severity.
The incident has generated criticism towards security and organization in the stadiums. The Honduran team holds the advantage in the qualifying round after winning 2-0 in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the Concacaf Nations League.
