Mexican authorities are investigating allegations against a scammer identified as Jonathan, who allegedly deceived and defrauded women through dating apps, specifically Bumble. They seek to clarify the facts and locate this individual.
The modus operandi of this scam includes creating fake profiles with stolen photos and a fictitious identity, followed by quickly establishing an emotional connection with the victims to gain their trust. Once this was achieved, he would ask for money for various reasons and upon receiving it, he would disappear, blocking the victim.
To avoid falling for such scams, it is recommended to verify the identity of the person being interacted with online, not to share personal or financial information, to be wary of money requests in the early stages of the relationship, and to conduct online searches to authenticate the information provided by the other party.
According to victim statements, Jonathan Sotelo was able to acquire a small plane and an apartment in Tulum thanks to the money he obtained from his deceptions, managing to take large sums of money from some women, such as two million pesos and the mortgage of an apartment. In turn, Fernanda, one of the affected, pointed out that this individual has been scamming since 2008, allowing him to acquire luxurious vehicles.
In a context where millions of people use dating apps and social networks daily to interact, cases like the 'Bumble scammer' arise, highlighting the importance of being alert and taking precautions when establishing online relationships.
