President Claudia Sheinbaum pointed out this Thursday that the Veracruz Prosecutor's Office must explain the reasons for the criminal process linking journalist Rafael León for alleged terrorism, a crime that, she affirmed, “has never been used in Mexico.”The head of state, during her morning conference, asked the Veracruz State Attorney General's Office to clarify why that particular accusation was used.“I don't know why the prosecutor's office uses the crime of terrorism, and in this case, the Veracruz prosecutor's office has to explain why they use this crime that has never been used in Mexico,” she said.Similarly, the head of state positioned herself in favor of “freedom of expression above all,” although she specified that “if there is a crime that this person has committed, even if they are a journalist, let it be an approved, real crime; in any case, the prosecutor's office also has to explain it, and it obviously cannot have to do with their journalism work.”Sheinbaum insisted on the priority of freedom of expression and the need for transparency from the local Prosecutor's Office. The president specified that she has not had direct contact with the governor of Veracruz regarding the case, although she stated that the Ministry of the Interior has been in contact with Governor Rocío Nahle.“I did not hear the governor's statement, the Ministry of the Interior has been in contact with her, and we are waiting for the Veracruz prosecutor's office to be able to provide more information on this case, what she said publicly that the prosecutor's office has to explain; so yes, it would be very good if the state prosecutor's office explains it as soon as possible,” she concluded. The journalist who covers police news was detained on December 24 in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, for the alleged crimes of terrorism and covering up in favor of public security institutions. The hearing is expected to continue tomorrow, Tuesday, December 30, so that the control judge can determine his legal situation and it will be known if he is or is not linked to the process.
