Tragedy Strikes in Zacatlán as Baby is Shot

In a week marked by tragedy, a 9-month-old baby lost his life due to a gunshot to the head during an attempted robbery on the Ahuazotepec-Zacatlán road in Puebla. This unfortunate event occurs shortly after the death of another 8-month-old baby in a daycare in Polanco.

The incident took place in an area near Ahuazotepec and Zacatlán, where a family was heading to a tourist destination in the Sierra Norte. In the midst of this journey, they were intercepted by armed individuals on board a truck who attempted to rob them. In response to this situation, the father accelerated to escape, which prompted the assailants to fire at the vehicle.

According to Governor Alejandro Armenta, this crime will not go unpunished. He expressed his solidarity with the parents of the deceased child, identified as René. A bullet struck the baby in the head, resulting in his death, while another injured his mother, named Daniela.

After the attack, the assailants fled, and local residents provided assistance to the family, as well as alerted the authorities in Zacatlán. The victims were taken to the General Hospital, where the baby's death was sadly confirmed.

The mayor of Zacatlán, Bety Sánchez Galindo, condemned the crime and accompanied the family at the hospital, expressing her solidarity with them amidst their immense grief. Through social media, she mentioned that the State Attorney General's Office and the Secretariat of the Interior will collaborate to identify the culprits.

In a broader context, the latest figures from the State Attorney General indicate a slight increase in intentional homicides and robberies in Puebla in the years 2024 and 2023, respectively. The commitment of the authorities is clear: there will be no impunity for this horrendous crime that has mourned the family and moved the community.
