The Public Education Secretariat (SEP) of Jalisco has launched the School Health Days at the primary school "Enrique Rébsamen" located in the Tabachines neighborhood of Zapopan. These days are part of the National Strategy for Healthy Living and were presented by the Secretary of Education of Jalisco, Juan Carlos Flores Miramontes.
At the launch event, Flores Miramontes stated that brigades will be deployed starting in the schools of Zapopan and will progressively reach schools in the rest of the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area (AMG).
"We start in Zapopan. First, we will focus on Zapopan, and until we finish in Zapopan, we will move to municipalities in the metropolitan area," he explained. He also mentioned that other brigades are already working with these days in the interior of the state, and it is expected that in a couple of weeks they can start in the northern zone. The brigades work in teams of three, addressing aspects such as height, oral health, and vision.
The purpose of the School Health Days in Jalisco is to reach more than 800 thousand students from five thousand primary schools in the interior of the state. During these activities, students will participate in talks about healthy living, oral health check-ups, weight and height measurement, and vision assessment, with the possibility of obtaining free glasses if necessary. All results of the assessments will be recorded in the Digital School Health Record.
Juan Carlos Flores Miramontes reminded students and parents that starting March 31, the sale of low nutritional value foods in schools will be prohibited to combat childhood obesity, which affects three out of every ten minors in Jalisco. The measure aims to promote healthier eating among the student population.
