Free Cataract Surgery Program in Zapopan

El Hospitalito has carried out a hundred cataract surgeries in the last three months, benefiting nine patients who needed intervention in both eyes. The beneficiaries were evaluated and diagnosed at the hospital itself, without medical complications for the surgery and with previous socioeconomic studies.

The "Hospitalito sees for you" program provides cataract surgery for free, including the intraocular lens, healing materials, surgical supplies, preoperative studies, and specialized consultations. The aim is to allow people with limited resources to improve their quality of life through this surgery.

Cataracts are one of the main causes of reversible blindness and can be congenital or develop due to aging and diseases such as diabetes. The program has received 404 requests for assistance and has successfully completed 100 surgeries so far.

Health authorities in Zapopan initially set a goal of 300 free surgeries, but due to high demand, attention will be expanded to cover the 404 registered individuals. According to Miguel Ricardo Ochoa Plascencia, general director of the Municipal Health Services, the Ophthalmology department performs between 10 and 20 interventions weekly to meet the requests.

The director emphasized the importance of this initiative by pointing out that only one-third of the people who suffer from cataracts undergo surgery due to economic limitations. The response from the community has exceeded expectations, reflecting the great need for this procedure to improve the quality of life for those who require it.
