The president of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, reaffirmed her position against the prohibition of narcocorridos after the Attorney General's Office of the State of Jalisco accused members of the musical group 'Los Alegres del Barranco' of alleged glorification of crime during a concert. In a press conference, Sheinbaum stated that instead of prohibiting, it is better to promote other types of music.
Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of guiding rather than censoring, especially after the controversy generated by the concert of 'Los Alegres del Barranco', where images of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes 'El Mencho' were mentioned and projected in the municipality of Zapopan, Jalisco. This state has banned the glorification of violence in public performances.
In the president's words: "From our perspective, rather than prohibiting, it is about educating, guiding, and letting the people and the youth stop listening to that music." Sheinbaum also mentioned that according to an unspecified survey, society rejects not only narcocorridos but also other musical genres that glorify violence, indicating a widespread social rejection.
The debate about narcocorridos has gained relevance due to the trial against 'Los Alegres del Barranco', however, Sheinbaum's stance is clear regarding the promotion of other music instead of prohibition. The leader insisted on the importance of education and guidance so that society, especially the youth, make informed decisions about the music they consume.
