Arrest of CJNG's Delta 1 in Zapopan

During the operation conducted by the employees of the National Guard and the elements of the National Guard, Armando Gomez Nunez, known as Delta 1 or Maximo, considered the leader of the Delta grouping, was detained. It is presumed that he acts under direct orders of the leader of the Cartel 'Jalisco New Generation' (CJNG) Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as 'El Mencho'. Gomez Nunez was handed over to the Management for the fight against organized crime (FEMDO) and the Service for the investigation of human rights violations in healthcare (FEIDCS) of the Attorney General's Office of Mexico in Mexico City after he was detained on the streets of Patria and Lago-Superior in the Lagos-del-Cantiri area in Zapopan, Jalisco.

Armando Gomez Nunez is considered a right-hand man of Martin Arzola Ortega, known as 'El 53' or 'El Negro', who was killed on August 1, 2019, as a result of a shooting in a Carl's Jr restaurant at Plaza Galerías in Zapopan. At the moment of the Delta 1 arrest, he was accompanied by a woman named Monica del Carmen, presumably his wife, involved in money laundering through spa salons and real estate deals. They were found with narcotics, weapons, cash, and premium-class smartphones.

Gomez Nunez had previously been arrested on June 21, 2020, on Manuel de Mimbela street near the Enrique Diaz-de-Leon avenue in the Hardines-del-Cantiri area following an operation by General Prosecutor's forces, military, and National Guard units, where long and short firearms, magazines, and drug packs for various sales were seized.

Armando Gomez, known as Delta 1, is identified as the main cell presumed to be expanding in Michoacán and coordinating CJNG elements in the so-called 'Corridor of Death' on the borders of Jalisco. According to court documents, he made agreements with the Los-Viagras criminal group for opposition and the withdrawal of Juan Jose Farias Alvarez, known as 'El Abuelo', the leader of the criminal group Cartel Unidos in the state of Michoacán.

Armando Gomez is also suspected in the attack on then-general prosecutor of Jalisco Luis Carlos Najera Gutierrez de Velasco at the Suntory restaurant on Chapultepec street on May 21, 2018, during the term of former governor Jorge Aristoteles Sandoval Diaz. He is also considered responsible for the self-governing in the juvenile complex Puente-Granada.

Delta 1, along with Francisco Javier Gudiño Jara, known as La Galina, and Carlos Andres Rivera Varela La Firma, is being accused of the murder of former governor Jalisco Aristoteles Sandoval, and also of close connections with Juan Carlos Gonzalez, known as '03' or 'El Pelon', passing 'Mencho'. The Delta group is being referred to in court documents as an extraordinarily violent group, specializing in murders, kidnappings, and extortions within the state borders as well as outside the borders of Jalisco.
