Possible Price Hike for Basic Grocery Basket in Mexico

Prices for essential goods in Mexico may rise by up to 25% due to economic threats and mass deportations announced by Donald Trump during his presidency. The head of the National Alliance of Small Merchants warns of potential cost increases affecting consumer households.

Possible Price Hike for Basic Grocery Basket in Mexico

The price of basic basket products could increase by up to 25% in the coming days or weeks due to the economic threats and mass deportations announced by Donald Trump at his inauguration as President of the United States. Cuauhtémoc Rivera, leader of the National Alliance of Small Merchants (Anpec), warned about this real risk caused by the new policies of the U.S. government.

Rivera explained that the threats to impose a 25% tariff on Mexican exports and Mexico's dependence on U.S. products such as corn, wheat, soy, beans, pork, chicken, vegetable oils, grapes, and apples could lead to an increase in the cost of the basic basket. This price hike could extend to other basic foods in Mexico, causing increases in fruits, vegetables, groceries, and basic grains.

The leader of small commerce mentioned that if grains, pork, dairy products, fruits, and vegetables imported from the United States become more expensive, this could affect the entire basic basket and disrupt the national price market. Rivera also warned that Trump's economic policies would worsen the economic blow faced by Mexican families during the already difficult January period.

In addition to the increases already seen in products like soft drinks, cigarettes, tortillas, bread, beer, gasoline, and diesel, the January pinch and low temperatures in the country have caused increases of one to three pesos in these items and between 10 and 20% in fruits, vegetables, sugar, and beans. Given this situation, new increases in the products of the basic basket are expected to worsen the economic situation of Mexican families.

Regarding the price of the Basic Food Basket in 2025, Anpec reported that it had an average cost of 1,916.35 pesos, exceeding two thousand pesos in 11 states of the country. Among the products that saw the highest price increases in early 2025 are cookies, laundry soap, snacks, beans, and apples.
