Reviving Economic Prosperity in Magdalena Contreras

The natural heritage of Magdalena Contreras is a key piece in its tourist attraction and in the regulation of the climate in the city. The diversity of trees, such as the canyon oak, pine, oyamel, and oak, not only beautify the environment but also play a fundamental role in water capture and in the protection of the Magdalena River, one of the few living rivers that remain in the area.

Mayor Fernando Mercado Guaida has launched a comprehensive plan to improve living conditions in the demarcation, which includes the regularization of settlements, access to water, and investment in infrastructure. Additionally, there is close collaboration with Xóchitl Ramírez Cordero, representative of Coparmex CDMX in the municipality, to promote formal employment, education, and gender equity.

The industrial history of the region was marked by the presence of traditional mills and textile factories in the 19th century, driving a significant transformation in the local economy. Currently, Magdalena Contreras houses four indigenous towns and 47 neighborhoods, with a total of 7,210 economic units and approximately 250,000 inhabitants, according to INEGI data.

Despite its rich history, the municipality faces challenges such as irregular settlements, lack of services and infrastructure, and the need for more efficient transportation. In this regard, planning is underway to implement a new cable car line to improve connectivity in the higher areas and boost tourism in the region.

The entrepreneurial spirit of the past has left an indelible mark on the identity of Magdalena Contreras, whose current name pays homage to the Contreras family, one of the pioneers in the area. Collaboration among citizens, government, and the private sector is essential to realize projects that allow for sustainable development that respects the environment. Together, it is possible for Magdalena Contreras to recover and surpass its past splendor.
