A Year of Economic Uncertainty in Mexico for 2025

The year 2025 is expected to be filled with uncertainty due to the tariffs imposed on Mexico by President Donald Trump, according to Altagracia Gómez Sierra from the Business Advisory Council. The expert highlights the complexity of evaluating the impact of these trade measures, pointing out that various factors will influence their consequences.

Among the variables to consider, Gómez Sierra mentions the exchange rate, where a possible depreciation of the peso could counteract certain negative effects of the tariffs. Despite the uncertainty, the government adviser anticipates that results will emerge in this scenario of trade noise.

In this sense, she emphasizes the importance of reinforcing joint work among entrepreneurs, particularly national and smaller ones, who will be more affected by these measures due to having less capacity for adaptation. Simplifying procedures is one of the key proposals to support small and medium-sized enterprises, whose survival is threatened in a high-bureaucracy environment.

In this regard, Gómez Sierra outlines the need to digitize the economy, highlighting that democratizing access to credit is fundamental to boosting SMEs. In this context, she mentions that the Mexico Plan aims for 30 percent of these companies to have access to financing, for which an agreement has been reached among various actors in the financial sector.

During her participation in a forum on the impact of U.S. measures on public finances, the expert underscores the temporary nature of generalized tariffs, which are usually part of negotiations that vary in duration. She highlights the importance of considering various factors in these scenarios, whether they are trade-related or linked to shared issues such as migration and security.
