The System for the Integral Development of the Family (DIF) in Guanajuato has delivered 9,036 seed packages in 387 communities in the state to promote the creation of family gardens. This initiative aims for families to produce their own food, reducing costs and ensuring a more balanced diet, as well as encouraging the efficient use of land and generating business opportunities through the sale of vegetables.
Among the seeds delivered are tomato, broccoli, lettuce, onion, chili, radish, carrot, Swiss chard, cabbage, beetroot, cilantro, cucumber, zucchini, and green tomato. Beneficiary families not only receive the seeds but also training in garden installation, irrigation techniques, and seed reproduction. Having a garden at home means eating healthier, saving money, and generating extra income, while also promoting the construction of microgreenhouses to improve seasonal vegetable production.
The Mobile Network: Health and Community Welfare program coordinates these actions to ensure that the gardens are sustainable and functional in the long term. In some communities, successful cases have already been documented where families have managed to establish productive gardens, generating income through the sale of vegetables.
Additionally, the municipal government of Guanajuato has promoted workshops on urban gardens, solid waste management, and composting, encouraging sustainable practices in more homes across the state.
