The Secretary of Economy of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard, is scheduled to travel to the United States on February 20 to meet with the Secretary of Commerce of the Donald Trump administration, Howard Lutnick, at the White House. The main objective of this meeting is to address the tariffs imposed by the United States on Mexico at the beginning of Trump's second term. Ebrard described this conversation as a key dialogue aimed at defining the path of economic integration between the two countries.
During a radio interview, Ebrard highlighted the importance of reminding officials of the Trump administration of the magnitude of imports and exports that occur between Mexico and the United States. It is expected to discuss how tariffs affect the U.S. economy, the issue of migration, and to establish closer communication with the new authorities.
Regarding expectations for this initial approach, Ebrard acknowledged that it is premature to expect immediate agreements, as the main goal is to initiate a fruitful dialogue. He also emphasized the uniqueness of the relationship between Mexico and the United States, noting that the percentage of imports compared to exports between the two countries is significant and unusual.
The meeting with the Secretary of Commerce and possibly with other U.S. officials such as the Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers aims to lay the groundwork for future agreements that strengthen economic integration between Mexico and the United States. Ebrard expressed his confidence that this positive dialogue could lead to beneficial agreements for both nations, although he does not expect concrete commitments to be reached during this first meeting.
