The Mexican film 'Emilia Pérez' is facing criticism for being one of the weakest nominees for Best Picture. Despite leading with 13 nominations, financial support and box office performance fell short, raising questions about its Oscar chances.

Controversy Surrounds 'Emilia Pérez' at the Oscars

The movie 'Emilia Pérez' did not receive much support in Mexico, generating only 460 thousand dollars at the box office. Despite being the most nominated film of the year, with 13 nominations in total, an anonymous voter from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed to 'Variety' that none of the voters leaned towards the film. This source described it as one of the worst among the nominated for Best Picture.

"It was a good year for cinema... it is fair to say that 'Emilia Pérez' was the worst of the nominees for Best Picture," revealed the voter. The controversy surrounding the Spanish actress influenced the voters' decision. Some expressed their disagreement with the film even before the controversy. Meanwhile, other movies like 'Anora' and 'Cónclave' have been receiving a lot of attention and could take home the Oscar for Best Picture.

During the Oscar voting, both 'Emilia Pérez' and Karla Sofía Gascón were ignored. According to the anonymous source from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Jacques Audiard's film was considered "the worst of the nominees for Best Picture." 'Emilia Pérez' is known for being controversial, not only for its poor representation of Mexico but also for past posts by Karla Sofía Gascón that have generated criticism and led Netflix to remove her from the film's promotions.

A report from 'Box Office Mojo' revealed that 'Emilia Pérez' grossed only 15 million dollars at the box office, while the production cost was 27 million dollars. In this sense, it seems that the film faces difficulties both in terms of critical reception and box office performance.
