Significant Price Drop in Fruits and Vegetables

The price of fruits and vegetables in Mexico registered its first drop in the last five years, providing some relief to consumers. The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported that the national inflation rate stood at 3.74% annually at the end of the first half of February 2025. However, the cost of fruits and vegetables experienced a reduction of 6.25% between the first half of February and the same period last year.

During January 2020, just before the pandemic, the price index of fruits and vegetables showed an annual decrease of 1.76%. Since then, over 60 consecutive months, these foods had increased in price. Official figures reflect that the current reduction is the most significant since the price crisis in May 2020 triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tomatoes topped the list of fruits and vegetables with the greatest price decrease in the first half of February 2025, with a drop of 18.53%. Nopales followed with a decrease of 10.66%, zucchini with an average reduction of 10.27%, watermelon with a drop of 10%, and onions with 7.81% less. Carrots and potatoes also reduced their prices by 4.79% and 2.64%, respectively.

On the other hand, the products that experienced a price increase in February 2025 were bananas with 5.74%, eggs with 5.28%, softeners and cleaners with 1.78%, beef with 1.11%, and pork with 1.01%, among others. Although eggs had the second largest increase, it was the main driver of inflation in this half due to being a mass-consumed food. Products sold in lunchrooms, eateries, tortilla shops, and taco shops, although ranked ninth in the list of the most expensive products, were the second contributing factor to inflation due to their wide preference among consumers.
