In Mexico, more than 714 million daily cyber attacks are recorded, motivated by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and trojans, primarily targeting users of banking applications, fintech platforms, and e-commerce sites. The company specialized in mobile threat prevention, Appdome, revealed that on average, mobile device users are targeted by nearly half a million attempts to steal financial information, personal data, and passwords.
Cybercriminals exploit vulnerabilities in mobile applications to commit fraud, scams, and access internal systems of companies. These crimes are becoming increasingly sophisticated and adaptive, constantly evolving to maximize profits and achieve their goals. The Consumer Expectation Report 2024 highlights that banking and investment applications are widely used in Mexico, with more than 90% of consumers considering it crucial to protect their financial and personal data.
According to recent data from the Mexican Banking Association (ABM), mobile banking has experienced growth of 11.2% in 2024, with more than 91 million mobile users currently. This trend is reflected in the increase in transactions, but also in the rise of scams and fraud affecting both users and companies alike.
Appdome highlights the presence of banking trojans like Xenomorph and SharkBot, which directly attack mobile banking applications by creating fake interfaces to capture credentials and evade multifactor authentication. On the other hand, the spyware Pegasus is used to hack mobile devices and covertly monitor user activity. Additionally, the RAT BRAT gives the attacker complete control over the infected device, allowing them to divert money, intercept communications, and even perform a factory reset to eliminate traces of the attack.
