The National Agricultural Council (CNA) expressed its concern over the United States' decision to impose tariffs of 25 percent on products from Mexico and Canada, warning that this measure will affect the economy of both nations and jeopardize food security in the region. According to the organization, American consumers may face increases in the prices of basic products, which would directly impact the most vulnerable communities.
In a statement, Jorge Esteve, president of the CNA, emphasized the importance of preserving food security in the region, highlighting the interdependence of agricultural markets between Mexico and the United States to ensure food supply in North America. The CNA confirmed that it will continue to closely monitor the situation and will be prepared to protect the interests of Mexican producers, as well as the economic and food stability of the region.
The implementation of the tariffs on March 4 has generated uncertainty in the markets and concern over the impact on trade integration between the two countries. For his part, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the imposition of tariffs on agricultural products from other countries starting April 2, which has sparked criticism and complaints from U.S. businessmen.
From the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Trump has been urged to refrain from applying these tariffs on Mexico and Canada, arguing that costs will end up being passed on to end consumers, which will harm American families and businesses. It is warned that tariffs will mainly impact companies, raising prices and putting jobs at risk, which will create unnecessary pressure on the economy and supply chains.
In this context, the CNA acknowledged the leadership of President Claudia Sheinbaum and the Government of Mexico for maintaining a dialogue and cooperation stance in the face of this situation. They valued the Federal Government's efforts to prioritize the well-being of productive sectors and consumers, highlighting the importance of working together to face the challenges arising from these tariffs.
In this way, the uncertainty and repercussions of the tariffs imposed by the United States on Mexico and Canada continue to generate concern across various sectors, from agricultural producers to end consumers, jeopardizing the economic and food stability of North America.
