US Imports from Mexico Reach $505 Billion in 2024

U.S. imports amounted to 49 billion 743 million dollars during 2024, representing 9.8 percent of total purchases from the Mexican market. In second place are automatic data processing machines and magnetic card readers, totaling 48 billion 325 million dollars (9.6 percent of the total). The third product in the ranking is motor vehicles for the transport of goods, with 37 billion 151 million dollars (7.3 percent of the total).

In fourth place are parts and accessories for motor vehicles, whose imports reached 36 billion 171 million dollars (7.2 percent of the total). In fifth place are cables, wires, fiber optic cables with sheathing, among others, with purchases exceeding 16 billion 362 million dollars (3.2 percent of the total). Completing the ranking are imports of crude oil and bituminous minerals (12 billion 108 million dollars); medical, surgical, dental, or veterinary instruments (12 billion dollars); telephones (10 billion 559 million dollars), tractors (9 billion 778 million dollars), and TV receivers, including video monitors and projectors (9 billion 712 million dollars).

These 10 products alone represent 47.8 percent of U.S. imports from Mexico. The imposition of 25 percent tariffs on Mexican imports by order of Donald Trump will be counterproductive for U.S. manufacturers and consumers, as these protectionist measures will raise prices on dozens of products.

In 2024 alone, imports of products from Mexico amounted to 505 billion 850 million dollars, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Thus, Mexico represented 15.4 percent of all imports made by the United States during the past year, positioning itself as its main trading partner, surpassing countries like Canada, China, Germany, Japan, or South Korea.

Texas is the largest customer of Mexican products. Just last year, it purchased products worth 157 billion 631 million dollars, representing 31 percent of all U.S. imports from Mexico. Following in the list are Michigan (15 percent of the total), California (13), Illinois (4), Georgia (4), Tennessee (3), Arizona (2), North Carolina (2), Ohio (2), Florida (2), and Kentucky (2). The entities that buy the least from Mexico are Hawaii, Wyoming, Alaska, the District of Columbia, and Maine, as all of them recorded imports of less than 100 million dollars during the entire past year.

The most demanded Mexican product in the United States is automobiles and vehicles for the transport of people.
