
President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada, which came into effect on March 4. However, one day later, U.S. authorities decided to lift some of these tariffs, suggesting the possibility of a ceasefire in the trade war between the involved countries.
Mexico's President, Claudia Sheinbaum, has highlighted her country’s strength in the face of these measures, stating that there will be no submission to the U.S. administration. She has also called for patience regarding the potential suspension of tariffs and has left open the possibility of a call with her U.S. counterpart.
For its part, it has been mentioned that the United States is considering exempting certain agricultural products from the tariffs imposed on Mexico and Canada. This evaluation comes after requests from legislators from states with agricultural interests in the U.S.
The Vice President of the United States, JD Vance, during his visit to the Mexico-U.S. border, expressed the desire to improve relations with Mexico and urged to seriously address the threat of drug cartels.
Regarding decisions on tariffs, it has been reported that cars produced in Mexico and Canada have been exempt from these fees for at least a month. This measure was taken after meetings between automotive industry representatives and Trump administration officials.
Both Mexico and Canada remain firm in their positions against Trump's tariffs. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has assured that his country will not lift its retaliatory tariffs until the U.S. does the same. In this context, a resolution on the situation is expected on the third day of the application of the tariffs.
