President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the resignation of Rogelio Ramírez de la O from the Secretariat of Finance and Public Credit, who had initially agreed to remain in office only until December but finally stayed until February. Following this announcement, Edgar Amador Zamora, who served as undersecretary, will take his place.
"It was my family commitments abroad that brought me to that set date for my return," Ramírez de la O explained the reasons for his departure. Although he was initially reluctant to extend his stay during the government transition, he agreed to remain until November for the budget transfer process.
Amid speculation about continuity in the role, President Claudia Sheinbaum decided to make changes in her Cabinet, announcing that all members will remain and highlighting the strength of the Mexican economy. Edgar Amador Zamora, who according to Sheinbaum is "an honest economist, convinced of the Fourth Transformation," will assume the role of new Secretary of Finance and Public Credit.
In a message issued from Palacio Nacional, Sheinbaum formalized Ramírez de la O's departure, indicating that he will take on the role of international economic advisor. For his part, Amador assured his commitment to the macroeconomic stabilization outlined in the 2025 budget, emphasizing the importance of building an economy on solid foundations amidst global uncertainty.
Former Secretary Ramírez de la O expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work on fiscal policies that prioritized the most vulnerable sectors, as well as investment in a context of debt normalization to face global uncertainty and high interest rates. Despite previously ruling out a defined exit date, the series of tensions in the national and international landscape influenced his resignation.
In a recent forum, the new Secretary Amador reaffirmed the commitment to achieving budgetary objectives, including reducing the fiscal deficit and driving towards a stable economy, dismissing the prospect of a recession despite current circumstances.
