Mexico Urged to Develop Strong Trade Strategy

The Mexican government is urged to establish a solid trade strategy to counter new U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum, set to escalate further with automotive duties.

Mexico Urged to Develop Strong Trade Strategy

The Mexican government must present a solid trade strategy to negotiate with U.S. President Donald Trump and avoid the imposition of new tariffs. Despite current diplomatic efforts, recently imposed tariffs on steel, aluminum, and those planned for automobiles and agricultural products could be difficult to eliminate entirely.

Gerardo Prado, a lawyer specializing in foreign trade, suggests that Mexico should announce potential areas where it could impose tariffs as a pressure measure for the U.S. administration to reconsider its stance. He emphasizes the importance of a written agreement between the nations to resolve the conflict in a lasting manner.

Prado also calls on industrial chambers and clusters to unite efforts in light of the current situation. He mentions that the postponement of tariffs in the automotive industry, achieved through intense lobbying, is an example of the effectiveness of working together within the T-MEC framework.

Regarding dialogue, Prado believes that Mexico has neglected its relationship with trade partners compared to previous periods. He highlights the importance of openness, dialogue, and communication to demonstrate to the United States, Canada, and the citizens of the three countries the benefits of working collaboratively rather than confronting each other separately.
