Estadio Azteca becomes Estadio Banorte

Estadio Azteca will change its name due to sponsorship from Banorte, although during the 2026 World Cup it will revert to its original name. FIFA prohibits the use of the new name during the tournament.

Estadio Azteca becomes Estadio Banorte

On March 14, Grupo Ollam announced a significant change by revealing that Estadio Azteca will be renamed Estadio Banorte due to sponsorship reasons. The banking company will invest 2 billion 100 million pesos in the renovation of the Coloso de Santa Úrsula.

FIFA quickly reacted to this news, as there are less than 500 days left until the start of the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The organization demanded that the venue retain its traditional name, as it strictly prohibits stadiums from carrying the name of a brand.

Although Club América will play at Estadio Banorte, during the 2026 World Cup the stadium will revert to being called Estadio Azteca. The same will happen with Estadio Akron and BBVA, which will temporarily change their names to Estadio Guadalajara and Estadio Monterrey, respectively. However, this will not affect the scheduling of matches in Mexico for the tournament.

The 2026 World Cup will begin on June 11 with a match of the Mexican national team at Estadio Azteca against an opponent yet to be determined. Mexico will host 13 matches, distributed as follows: Estadio Azteca will host five matches, including 3 from the group stage (two from Mexico), one from the Round of 16, and another from the quarter-finals. Estadio Guadalajara will host four group stage matches, including one of the Mexican national team, and Estadio Monterrey will host four matches, three from the group stage and one from the Round of 16.
