New Circular Economy Law in Mexico

Every year, up to 30 million tires are manufactured and up to 5 million truck tires are imported. The tire industry in Mexico is looking to create a Circular Economy Law to increase tire recycling at the end of their useful life and use recycled materials in more sustainable mixtures.

One of the companies investing in circular economy solutions focused on the plastic industry is Circulate Capital. This global company will allocate up to 70 million dollars in Latin America, including Mexico, to develop such solutions. Companies like Cementos Moctezuma, Holcim, and Cemex are already using tires in their processes to reduce carbon emissions, although there are still around 300 million tires in the country that are not recycled.

According to Juan Pablo RĂos y Valles Boysselle, president of the National Chamber of the Rubber Industry, Mexico is a major tire producer. Approximately 10% of the 30 million tires manufactured annually are recycled. Despite the efforts of the tire industry, tire recycling represents only 10% of the discarded tires each year.

Companies like cement manufacturers have taken the lead in tire recycling in Mexico. Circulate Capital is working on recycling projects in Latin America to prevent millions of tons of plastics from reaching the sea. The company aims to capture, sort, and recycle these plastics to reduce pollution in the oceans.

Industry experts point out that solid regulation promoting the circular economy and public policies favoring recycling could contribute to improving recycling practices in Mexico. The importance of collaboration between industries, consumers, and the government to promote a cleaner circular economy in the country is emphasized.
