Logistic pooling, which involves grouping loads from various companies to send them together, is a practice that not only optimizes logistics costs but also reduces the carbon footprint. Companies like CHEP are dedicated to providing pallet and container pooling services, sharing, repairing, and reusing these materials for the transport of goods from various industries.
Jorge Montaño, supply chain VP at CHEP Latin America, mentioned: "We provide the necessary materials to our clients for their rental service and afterwards, we collect, inspect, and if necessary, repair it to make it available for others again." This pooling strategy helps optimize logistical efficiency and reduce environmental impact by promoting resource reuse and minimizing waste generation and carbon footprint.
DHL Supply Chain, through smart routing technology, also operates this type of model to ensure traceability, timing, and service conditions in sectors such as consumer goods, automotive industry, and Life Sciences & HealthCare. Alejandro Echeverri, Transportation leader at DHL Supply Chain Mexico, highlighted the benefits of pooling in reducing operational costs and optimizing resources.
One of the key advantages of logistic pooling is the reduction of carbon emissions. For example, by using CHEP pallets, its clients in Latin America were able to reduce up to 255 kilotons of CO2, avoiding the use of 1.46 million cubic meters of wood and eliminating the generation of 426 kilotons of waste. The implementation of sustainable solutions in supply chains allows business partners to quantify these reductions through a Life Cycle Analysis.
Regarding CHEP's direct operations, the company has achieved 100% use of renewable electrical energy in its operations, carbon neutrality, global emission reductions, and zero waste generation sent to landfills in most of its facilities. The growth of pooling in Mexico is increasing, as companies are becoming more interested in collaborative models that contribute to efficiency and sustainability in their logistics operations.
